Chapter 24: The Door
I read it three times at the counter.
Clem read it over my shoulder and put his spatula down.
"You don't owe him a minute," he said.
"I know."
"So you're going."
"I'm going."
He didn't argue. He just packed me a sandwich.
The visiting room at the regional jail was gray cinder block with one table bolted to the floor.
They brought him in wearing orange, with a chain from his wrists to his waist.
His hair had gone from silver to white since the arrest. It was cut short now, by somebody who didn't care.
He sat down across from me and smiled anyway.
"You came."
"You asked. I wanted to hear what for."
He looked at my forehead. At the scar.
"I'll be gone a long time," he said. "Augustus won't speak to me. Rowena sends my letters back unopened. There's no one left to carry anything."
"Carry what?"
"There's money they never found." He said it softly, like a gift. "More than the trucks were ever worth. Accounts in places your captain can't spell. And there's the name."
