Chapter 21: A Month

The month ended on a Friday, and every hour had felt long.

Brenda had walked into the sheriff's office the morning after the porch.

She was out on bond now, in her sister's guest room, waiting for a judge.

Isabella Marie Stovall had a stone with her whole name on it.

Odette carried the roses.

I had a plate of cayenne potatoes in the break room at six, a double shift behind me, and one thing left on my list.

Luke was loading the last pallet onto the van when I walked up behind him.

"It's been a month," I said.

He didn't turn.

"I know."

"You said you wanted me to be sure."

"I did." He set the box down. "Ginny, you don't have to..."

"Luke."

He turned.

The loading lights were bright behind him and his face was in shadow.

"I was sure at the kitchen counter," I said. "I was sure when you went to my father and didn't ask me first, and then told me the second you had. I'm sure now."

"You're still angry about the call."

"I'm angry for a different reason now. I'm angry you made me wait."

He laughed, low and shaky, and put the back of his wrist over his mouth.

"Where?" he said.

"Not the cot."

"God, no."

"Your place."

His eyes went dark and steady.

"Get in the van," he said.

He lived in a small yellow house on the bayou, with a screened porch and a kitchen so clean it looked untouched.

He opened the front door and stood back to let me in.

Inside, he flipped on one lamp.

I turned around and found him very close.
