Chapter 23: The Wedding
Mom walked down the aisle on the arm of the old farmer from three rows over at the market, who was giving her away.
He cried the entire time, and she told him to blow his nose.
Stanley waited under the arch Justin and I had hung with ivy that morning.
He wore a gray suit and the whistle on its cord, because Mom had said he could.
The yard was full.
Half the market was there, and the nurses in their church clothes, and eighty women who had stood in a clinic lobby one night with paper cups.
The woman in the yellow dress sat in the second row in a new yellow dress.
I stood at Mom's left in dark green, holding her bouquet of dill and white roses.
Justin stood on the other side of Stanley, in a tux, trying not to look at me.
He looked at me anyway.
The minister had barely opened his book when a white car pulled up at the end of the driveway.
My stomach dropped.
Lena got out in a navy suit.
She carried a small black speaker in one hand, and she started up the grass between the chairs.
Heads turned all down the rows.
"Don't," said Justin, under his breath.
"Everyone, I'm sorry to interrupt," Lena said, in her bright office voice. "I have a little gift for the happy couple."
The deputy was already on his feet at the back, but it was Mom who spoke.
"Stanley," she said. "Give me a minute."
She lifted the hem of her dress and walked down the aisle toward Lena.
Every guest watched her go.
She stopped three feet away and held out her hand.
"Give me the speaker."
"I don't think so."
"Lena." Mom's voice was perfectly pleasant. "I've heard it. My daughter's heard it. The whole county's heard it. There is nothing on that speaker that anyone here doesn't know."
