Chapter 11: The Door
On Saturday morning someone knocked on our door with the heel of a hand, three times, hard.
I opened it in my robe with a piece of toast in my mouth.
Gretchen Boerner stood on the landing in a cream blazer, with a coffee in one hand and her phone in the other.
"Good morning, Maricela," she said. "Is Jake home?"
"He's here."
"I'm right here," Jakob said behind me.
He had come out of his room in jeans, with his hair wet from the shower.
His hand settled at the small of my back.
It was a flat, warm weight, and it did not move.
Gretchen's eyes dropped to it and came back up.
"I won't take long," she said. "I thought you'd rather do this in private."
She held up her phone.
On the screen was a photograph, grainy with the flash, of a rooftop at night.
A lawn chair stood in the middle, and a woman sat in a man's lap with her bare shoulders turned toward the camera.
I knew the shoulders.
