By nine on Sunday morning, the fourplex on Pereida Street smelled of lard, red chile and simmering pork.
My mother had arrived at seven with four aunts, three stockpots and a folding table.
My Abuela had arrived at eight in a taxi, with a pot of beans on her lap and an opinion about my stove.
Candelaria was Tuesday, and Nelda Kothmann believed that tamales were made three days ahead or not at all.
Our kitchen had never held so many women.
They stood shoulder to shoulder around the table with their sleeves pushed up, spreading masa on soaked corn husks, talking in two languages at once.
Jakob stood in the middle of them, a head taller than all of them put together.
His hands were in a bowl of masa up to the wrists, and a smear of flour crossed his forehead.
"Not so thick, mijo," said an aunt. "A thin layer."
"Yes, ma'am," Jakob said.
"Like that. See, he listens," the aunt told the others.
"He's a good boy," said another aunt. "Maricela, he's a good boy."
"He's not a boy, Tia, he's thirty."
"He's a boy until he's married."
Jakob caught my eye across the table and raised his floury eyebrows.
