Chapter 21: The Receipt

"Because you were leaving," Brynn said.

She was still looking at me, not at my father.

"I saw the email on the kitchen iPad in June. Presidential Scholar. Full ride. Chicago."

She smiled a little.

"You'd told no one. You were going to walk out of this house with a duffel bag and never pay for a single thing."

"Pay for what?" I said.

"For being the one they got to keep."

My mother made a small sound.

"You don't know what it was like," Brynn said to the room, quietly.

"I was six. I came here with a purple suitcase and a stuffed rabbit. For a month Aunt Laurel cried every time she looked at me."

"Brynn," my mother said.

"I thought it was because she was sad for me."

She tilted her head at my father.

"Then I found out I was the reason he didn't go to prison."

She looked at my mother.

"Every time you said you were lucky to have me, Aunt Laurel, I wondered who'd been lucky. Every dress. Every school."

Her voice thinned.

"You'd say, 'Brynn needs more support.' I figured out what the support was for."

Her voice stayed light. It was worse than shouting.

"Do you know what the parent portal at Kellerman does?" she asked me.

She did not wait for an answer.

"It sends Aunt Laurel a notice every time I'm late. She checked it every day."

I said nothing.

"Yours was never activated, Kay. Did you know that? Your school offered it. Nobody turned it on."
