Chapter 10: Friday

I did not ask Ethan that night.

I asked the Grand Aldine.

The ballroom's owner was a short, silver-haired man, and he took my call himself.

He remembered me from the engagement party, and he was kind about it.

"I'm sorry about what happened under my roof, Mrs. Rudd," he said. "Your husband was the only one who didn't laugh."

"That's why I'm calling. How long has he worked for you?"

"Two years, nearly. He's not on my payroll, you understand. Rudd Security supplies my door staff."

My hand stopped on the phone.

"Rudd Security."

"His firm. Small outfit, very reliable. He sends himself on certain nights."

"Which nights?"

I heard pages turning.

"Funny," the owner said. "Every event your family booked. The Penhallow Foundation gala, your mother's birthday, the engagement party. He never works anyone else's party. I asked him once, and he said the rest of my rotation was covered."

I thanked him and sat in the attic with the dead phone in my hand.

My husband had not been a guard by accident.

He had been standing at that door for two years, waiting for my mother.

I heard his key in the lock at midnight.

I was sitting on the end of the bed with the lights on.

"The ballroom's owner says you own Rudd Security," I said.

Ethan set down his keys.

"Yes."

"He says you only work my mother's parties."

"Yes."

"Is that the thing Grayson meant?"

"Yes."

I had expected a lie, and the plain yes knocked the wind out of me.

"Then tell me."

"I will," he said. "On Friday."

"Why Friday?"

"Because on Friday I will have the last piece, and then I can tell you all of it instead of half. I don't want to hand you half of this, Claire. You'd leave."
