Ethan's POV

She took the note out of the case and walked out of the flat with it, and I let her.

I stood in the middle of the room and did not follow.

I had no right.

The door closed, and I heard her feet go down the stairs, quick and light, and then the street door.

Then it was quiet, and I was alone with the open case.

I sat down on the floor, because that was where I had slept for two weeks, and I put my back against the bed.

Eight years ago, I came home from a night shift to a garage with the door down and the engine running.

I was twenty-three.

I broke the window with my elbow.

I got him out onto the concrete, and he was already gone.

On the workbench was a letter to the bank, half-written.

It said: I did not sign that paper.

Nobody had read it, because nobody had asked.

The Tulls' lawyers called him a bitter partner with a gambling habit, which was a lie.

The Penhallows sent flowers and a card that said, With deepest sympathy.

Margo's handwriting.

I kept the card.

It was in the case, under the deed.

I spent four years in the Army after that, and four years more learning how a note changes hands.

A building at a time, a loan at a time, through shell firms, I bought Margo Penhallow's debt.

She never looked at who held it.

Women like her do not look at the name on a payment slip.

I started Rudd Security with a van and two men.

It was a front, but it was also true.

When I learned she would host the engagement of her daughter to Grayson Tull, the son of the man who signed the false papers, I took the door myself.
