Chapter 13: No Sale

Claire's POV

Beatrice laid my father's partnership papers on the attic table at seven the next morning.

They were the original pages, yellow at the edges, with two blue signatures at the bottom.

"Your father," Beatrice said, and tapped the first. "Tom Rudd." Both signed in front of a notary, who stamped the page the same day.

Ethan stood at my shoulder and did not breathe.

"The forged copy has no notary stamp," Beatrice went on. "I looked at it again last night. Nobody ever asked."

"Why did you keep these?" Ethan asked.

"Because your father came to my door the week after the funeral," she said. "He asked me to hold them. I told him I would, and then Margo told me to stay out of it, and I did."

She took off her glasses.

"I stayed out of it for eight years. I am done."

Ethan looked at the old signature of the man in the photograph, and his jaw worked once.

"Thank you," he said.

"Don't thank me yet, young man. Margo will fight dirty."

She was right.

That evening was the Penhallow Foundation donor dinner at the Carrow Hotel, the one night of the year my mother could not skip.

I wore the green dress Beatrice found for me.

Ethan wore a dark suit, and every woman in the lobby looked at him twice.

My mother found us before we reached our table.

She stood very straight in black silk, and her smile was perfect.

"Claire. Ethan. Come, let's talk in the corridor."
