Madalena's POV
The Three Kings dinner at the Portuguese club had three hundred chairs, and the cake took up a whole table.
Bolo rei is a ring of sweet bread studded with candied fruit, with a dried fava bean baked inside.
Whoever bites the bean buys next year's cake.
The cake sat on a table at the front, under a banner of three crowned kings, and a priest was about to bless it.
I wore my green dress, and my hair was still damp at the ends from his shower.
Riccardo had handed me the ring back at dawn without a word, and I had put it on without looking at his hands.
Now he sat beside me in a dark suit with his shoulders very straight.
He had not eaten.
Twice he'd started to say something, and twice he'd looked toward the head table and stopped.
"After the cake," I had told him in the car. "I said after."
"I know."
"You can tell me in the parking lot."
