Chapter 14: Her Mother's Kitchen
Two days after the seawall I went to my mother's kitchen, because I had nowhere else to put my hands.
The yellow house on Gano Street was where I grew up.
Palmira still cooked there on weekday mornings, though she slept now on Blackstone Boulevard.
She said the stove on Gano Street knew her.
When I came in she was standing at the counter with a mountain of kale, cutting it into threads.
She did not look up.
"Sit," she said.
I sat at the table where my father used to read the tide tables.
My phone lay face down in front of me.
Riccardo had texted once, the morning after, and I had not answered.
I did not need to read it again.
"I did not stop wanting you in that car," the text began.
"I'll say it as often as you want it said."
"I'll be wherever you tell me."
There was a faint blue mark on the inside of my left wrist, where his hand had held me down.
I pressed my thumb into it under the table.
Heat went straight through me, low and sudden, and I took my thumb away.
My mother's knife went on, tick, tick, tick.
