Chapter 20: The Wrong Cup
The Prince drank the whole cup, because he had never in his life been told to sip.
Sorrel drank a mouthful of plain wine from the silver one, and put her hand to her throat.
Nothing happened.
She waited, with her eyes wide and a little desperate, for a feeling that would not come.
The ballroom drank with them, two hundred cups lifted to the realm.
"To the heart that holds us," said the steward, and the music started.
I counted in my head.
At eleven the Prince blinked.
At fifteen he put a hand to his chest.
At twenty his face went the color of candle wax.
"Mother," he said, in a puzzled voice.
His cup rang on the marble.
His knees folded, and he went down on the white lilies spilled across the floor.
Someone screamed.
It was not Sorrel, not yet.
The Queen rose from her chair with her stick in one fist, and the whole room became a sound.
