Chapter 28: The Hearing

The Director took the witness chair in Courtroom 2108 at 10:20 on Monday morning with her cardigan buttoned and her hands folded in her lap.

The county's lawyer was the short woman who had not slept since November.

She called the Director as an adverse witness and led her through the Silence Board, the cold house and the blue tags.

The Director answered every question in her reasonable voice.

Yes, the Bureau held two hundred and twelve remains at Joliet.

Yes, they were frozen, because untreated fissure remains decayed in days.

"Doctor Mroz says they are people," the county's lawyer said.

"The pathologist found dental work, healed fractures and a surgical scar."

"How does the Bureau account for that?"

"Incorporation," the Director said. "A fold that has eaten a man carries him."

"Metal, bone and enamel survive in the gut and are folded into the animal's tissue. The Bureau has documented it for six years."

It was the sentence I had been waiting for, because it was good enough to sound true.

The judge sucked his cough drop and looked at the ceiling.

"Counsel for the Bureau may cross," he said.

The silver-tie lawyer stood, and I watched him enjoy it.
