Chapter 29: Directive Seven, Repealed
The meeting that ended Directive 7 took place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
It was held in the Director's own conference room on the twenty-third floor, under the Silence Board.
The Governor came in first, a woman of sixty in a navy coat.
Behind her came the Attorney General, a tall man in rimless glasses with a leather folder under his arm.
The Board President came in with the county's lawyer, and Reiss and Deloris and the Marine stood along the window in their best clothes.
I stood with them, and my mother's thermos was in my bag, because she had pressed it on me at the door.
A screen on the wall showed a deputy director of the Fissure Bureau, seated in Washington in front of a flag.
He had the careful face of a man who had been on the phone for fourteen hours.
The Director sat alone at the head of the table in her cardigan with her hands flat on the wood.
Nobody had asked her to sit there, and nobody told her to move.
"I'll be brief," the Attorney General said.
"At 7:50 this morning a trooper took a swab from your head of security in your lobby, Madam Director, as he arrived for work."
