Chapter 12: What I Didn't Say

On day fourteen of the rabbit and greens, Cedric stood up at the Stonecrest long table with an envelope in his hand.

Sixty wolves stopped eating.

It was Sunday supper, and Ronan had put out a roast.

Cedric had a plate of boiled greens.

"I want to say something in front of everyone," he said. "Sit down, Flora, please. This is for you."

I put down my fork.

"Fourteen months ago I mated a woman who told me on our wedding night that she didn't need anything from me."

The hall went still.

"I took her at her word," he said. "I thought it was a kindness. I thought I was leaving her alone."

"Cedric," I said quietly.

"Let me finish."

He opened the envelope.

"This is a transfer for twenty-nine thousand four hundred dollars, from my own account to an account in your name at the credit union in town. Fourteen months of the allowance, paid back. Philippa will pay me back, but you don't wait for that."

He laid a second sheet next to my plate.

"This is the Luna's allowance from today. It goes to you directly. Nobody signs for it but you."

I stared at the paper.

"And this."

Dr. Quince had come up beside him with a thin leather folder.

He set it down on the table.

"The deed to forty acres on Pine Road," Cedric said. "Your father's land. It was in the cellar case with the old charter, filed under my name since our wedding. Dr. Quince took it out with the text the night he left."

I put my hand on the folder.

"It's yours," Cedric said. "In your name. Nobody can take it. Not me, not the pack, not a Council."

I couldn't speak.

My father had died in a logging accident when I was nineteen.
