Chapter 14: Mine to Feed

Ronan met us in the yard with six hunters and a face with no beer in it.

"The Watch sent a message with the rider," he said. "Holly's family is being held as guests. Nobody is hurt."

"Guests," Holly said. Her hands were shaking. "She's keeping them so I'll stay quiet."

"She's keeping them so Cedric comes alone," Ronan said. "That's the trade she wants."

Cedric was already turning toward the road.

I took his sleeve.

"No."

"They're Redhollow. They're mine to get out."

"You can't shift without me," I said. "You can't even stand in front of a crowd without me. Walk in there alone tonight and you'll be on your knees by the second gate."

His jaw worked.

Ronan said, "No armed wolf crosses a border before a Moot. If I send hunters over, I'm the one who broke the peace. Philippa would love that."

"Then what do we do?" Holly said.

I looked at her, and I made myself say it plainly.

"At first light we go with the envoys of two packs, in daylight, with witnesses. Tonight nobody touches your mother. Philippa needs her alive."

Holly pressed her fist against her mouth and nodded.

"I promise you," I said.

Ronan put two hunters on the road and two at the river, and sent Holly to sleep in the clinic with Dr. Quince.

Then he looked at the two of us, and at my dress, which I had put on inside out, and he coughed.

"Go to bed, Luna," he said. "I heard nothing."

I took Cedric's hand and walked him back to the cabin.

I locked the door.

He stood in the lamplight with his hands hanging, the gold gone out of his eyes, and I knew what he was about to say.

"We can't do this tonight."

"We can."

"Her mother is in there. If you want to wait..."

"I want to wait for nothing," I said. "I'm six months pregnant, I'm furious, and I'm scared. If I don't have your hands on me tonight I'll lie awake all night and do arithmetic about Philippa."

"Flora, you named your price."

"I know what I named."

I walked up to him and put my palms on his chest.

"I'm not paying it with this. You'll pay the rest in the daylight, where everyone can see. This is mine. I'm choosing it, and it's not for you to earn."
