Chapter 15: The Envoys

The Council's envoys reached Stonecrest at sunrise, before I had finished my second breakfast.

There were two of them, a gray-haired woman in a plain coat and a young man in a very good one.

The woman asked for a table and a chair.

The man asked for a stopwatch to time my breathing.

Ronan gave them his hall, and sixty hunters came to watch.

Cedric sat at my left.

His eyes were green and calm, and under the table his knee was pressed against mine.

"Luna Bradford," the young man said, glancing at his notes. "The charge before the Council is that you are unfit to carry the heirs of Redhollow. I'll begin with the obvious."

"Begin," I said.

"You are thin, you are living on another Alpha's charity, and you own nothing."

The hall muttered.

"You have no income," he went on. "No holdings. A Luna who cannot feed her pups cannot raise them. I see no choice but to recommend that the Moot take them at birth."

I reached into my bag and laid two papers on the table.

"The first is a statement from the Duluth credit union. It shows twenty-nine thousand four hundred dollars in an account in my name, and a monthly deposit of twenty-one hundred dollars from the Luna's allowance."

"That is days old," he said.

"It is fourteen months of what I was owed, paid back. The second paper is the deed to forty acres on Pine Road. It was my father's. It is in my name."

The gray-haired woman picked up the deed and read all of it.

"These are in order," she said.

"They were arranged very recently," the man said smoothly. "A Luna who is truly capable does not need her Alpha to arrange her affairs at the last minute."

Dr. Quince stood up in the back.

"I examined the Luna yesterday," he said. "Two heartbeats, strong. She has gained eleven pounds in the last two weeks, because for the first time in fourteen months, she has been fed."
