Chapter 17: The Truce Supper

Flora's POV

Philippa sent the request the morning after Cedric came home with the gate keys.

It came on cream paper, hand-delivered, in her neat round writing.

I would like to make peace before the Moot. A supper at Stonecrest, Luna to Beta, woman to woman. No Alphas. I am so sorry for everything.

"She's scared," Ronan said, reading it over my shoulder.

"She's fishing," Cedric said. He had a split lip and two cracked ribs.

The gold behind his eyes hadn't gone out since he walked in at dawn. "She wants you alone."

"Then she gets me alone."

"Flora."

"She's going to say something," I said. "She's never once been able to stop herself from being sorry out loud. I want her to be sorry in front of the right people."

Ronan looked at the thin wooden wall of his own smoke room.

It had a sliding panel at one end, the kind that opened to make the hall bigger for feasts.

"I have sixty hunters who can hold their breath for an hour," he said slowly.

"Make it a hundred. Ashgrove's envoys, the Council's woman, Dr. Quince. And Holly."

She came at six in her cream blazer with a gold pin and two Watchmen she left in the yard.

She carried a covered dish.

"I made it myself," Philippa said, smiling. "Pot roast. I thought, if you can't trust the cook anymore..."

"How thoughtful," I said.

I took the dish and set it at the far end of the table, away from both of us.

Ronan's kitchen had sent in a roast chicken, and I carved myself a leg.
