Chapter 23: The Rooftop
"I said I'd never decide for you again," Si-wan said.
He stood in the middle of the corner office with the door shut and his hands open at his sides.
"And at six-ten on a Monday morning I did it anyway. I know."
"Then that is twice you decided first," Eun-ho said.
"I know."
"I felt it the second the lock turned. So did you."
"I know, Eun-ho."
"What was the plan, exactly? Put three men on my life and tell me afterward?"
"Yes."
Eun-ho blinked.
"That's it? Yes?"
"I'm not going to argue. It was wrong." Si-wan's jaw worked.
"I'm just going to tell you what I felt, because you'll feel it, anyway."
"When I woke up with your blood in my mouth and your pulse in my head, I thought: if anyone touches him, I'll burn the city."
"Si-wan."
"I'm not good at this. I've been afraid for twenty years, and I'm better at fear than at asking."
Eun-ho looked at him.
He felt the truth of it, simple and clear, humming along the line between them.
Then he did something he hadn't planned.
He walked around the desk and sat in Si-wan's chair.
It was a big leather chair, and he had stood behind it a thousand times.
He leaned back and put his feet up on the blotter and looked at Si-wan.
"Here's my offer," Eun-ho said.
Si-wan stared.
"The guards go. All three."
"If someone wants to come for me, they'll come through a bond that tells you where I am and how I feel, and I carry a phone, and my sister is a lot scarier than your security."
