Chapter 7: The Man in the River
"No," Bram said.
"I'm only going to look."
"You're going to look from behind a tree, with my hand on your belt."
"You don't have a hand on my belt."
"I will in a second."
He did.
We stood in the willows on the Kettle River side of the water, a hundred yards from the border stones, where the river ran wide and shallow over a gravel bar.
The sky was heavy and the moon was a smear behind clouds.
Out in the river, up to his waist in black water, stood my husband.
He had lost the funeral coat.
His shirt was soaked and stuck to him, and his dark hair hung in his eyes.
He was shouting.
"Morven!"
His voice hit the far bank and came back.
"Morven!"
It wasn't the voice from the funeral.
It was ragged, and it cracked in the middle of my name.
On the Ironwood shore, a big sandy-haired man in a leather vest stood with his hands cupped around his mouth.
He was the Beta, and he had been shouting too, only differently.
"Alpha, come out! It's been two days! The river doesn't give them back!"
"It gave her to someone!" Cormac roared. "I felt the bond move!"
My heart hit my ribs so hard I had to put a hand on a trunk.
"He felt it," I whispered.
"Is that bad?" Bram murmured.
"It's the bond. It stayed open a crack. It went when he shut it and came back when I..." I swallowed. "When I put my hand on the phone."
"It knows you stole it."
"It knows I'm alive."
Cormac waded a few steps toward our side, and then stopped.
The border stones were there in the gravel, old and knee high, carved with a wave.
Alpha law says an Alpha can't step over another Alpha's border without leave.
