Chapter 13: Who Told You

"Who told you," I said.

Ansel stayed on his knees on my floor, and for a moment I thought he would not answer.

"Cordelia," he said.

Odessa's cane tapped once on the boards.

"Seven years ago," Ansel said. "You were nineteen. I had decided to ask you to the cliffs on your birthday."

"She found me in the boathouse that morning."

"She said you had told her something and begged her not to repeat it."

"What?"

"That you'd never think of me that way," he said. "That I was like a brother, and you were afraid I'd put you out of the hall if I knew."

I heard it, and for a second the words had no meaning at all.

"I never said that," I said.

"I know that now."

"I never said that to her. I never said anything to her about you except that you left towels on the clinic floor."

"I believed her."

"For seven years!" I said, and my voice cracked off the walls. "You built your whole life around a sentence I never spoke. You never asked me one question."

"I was afraid you'd say it to my face."

"So you'd rather I guessed!"

"Freja."

"Stop talking," I said. "Everything you say is seven years late. Just stop."

He closed his mouth and bowed his head.

Odessa got up from the chair with a grunt and took her cane.

"I'll be downstairs, eating whatever that woman will sell me," she said. "Don't kill each other. I've buried enough Garricks."

The door shut behind her.

I stood at the window for a long time with my arms wrapped around myself, and the harbor lights came on one at a time.

My phone buzzed on the table.

It was Nolan.

"Emmett's red-eye lands at six tomorrow. I'm driving to Portland tonight to get him. I'm telling you, so you don't have to guess."
