Chapter 4: Say It Out Loud
The fever broke a little before dawn, and I woke up with the sheet stuck to my back and the sky going grey in the window.
Ansel was sitting on the floor by the bed exactly where he had said he would be.
His back was against the wall, his knees were up, and the wet cloth was folded in his hand.
His eyes were open.
"You didn't sleep," I said.
"No."
"Why not?"
"You kept saying a name in your sleep," he said. "I wanted to know if it was mine."
My face went hot.
"Was it?"
"No," he said. "It was Nolan's."
I laughed before I could stop myself, and then I coughed, and he was on his feet with the thermos before I'd finished.
I drank the willow bark tea, which tasted like a lawn.
The room was small and cold and smelled of rain, and the Alpha of the Garrick Pack stood in the middle of it with his hands hanging at his sides.
"Sit," I said.
He sat on the one wooden chair.
"I have terms," I said.
"Say them."
"You will not turn up outside my door and leave me to guess why. For thirty days, you say what you're going to do before you do it. Every plan. Every time."
"Yes."
"And I say what I want," I said slowly. "Out loud. To you. Even when it's small."
He had gone very still.
"You'd tell me what you want," he said, like it was a language he'd heard about once.
"If you tell me what you're doing," I said. "Thirty days. And at the end of it you say my release or you tell me why you won't."
