Chapter 24: The Cold Moon
The recording clicked off.
Gunnar set his phone down on the blanket, very gently.
"Kneel, leave, or fight," I said.
"He thinks I'll leave."
"Will you?"
He looked up at the ceiling, at the floor above us where five kids were asleep in a heap.
"No," he said.
"Will you kneel?"
"I knelt once this week. To Glory." He almost smiled. "That's my limit."
"Then you fight him."
"Then I go into the Ring," he said. "What happens in it is up to Colt."
The Cold Moon was four weeks off.
The pack spent them deciding which side of the valley to stand on.
Some days the porch was full of coffee cups. Some days it was empty.
Fern drove up every night with leftovers and the gossip.
"Half the enforcers are telling Colt they're sick. The other half are actually sick of him."
Glory carried the phone in her boot every day, to school and back.
Gunnar fixed the back door with oak and three new hinges.
He didn't train for the Ring.
He split wood, taught the twins to stack it, and built the little one a step stool for the sink.
