Chapter 10: Down

"Get up," I told Kurt, and then I heard what I'd said.

He was already rising, his face dark and his breath uneven.

"That wasn't you," I said. "I didn't mean it."

"I know. It came off you in a wave."

"Kurt, I'm sorry."

"Don't be." He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

"I'm an Alpha, and I just knelt in my shirt. Whatever this is, it's very big."

We reached the Harrow Ridge packhouse at noon, three hours after the moot had started without us.

Kurt parked in the front lot, and the doors to the hall stood open.

Inside, the whole pack sat shoulder to shoulder on the benches.

The Elders sat in a row on the dais.

Torin stood in front of them in his charcoal coat.

"The Luna's rooms were stripped," he was saying.

"A family deed and a number of pack records are missing. She did not attend."

"I ask for judgment against her."

Margo sat in the front row in a pale blue dress with a hand on her belly.

I walked up the center aisle with Kurt a step behind me.

"I attended," I said.

Every head turned.

Torin spun around.

"You're late," he said.

"I was delayed. You closed the bridge."

"Seize her," he said, and gestured to the guards at the side door.

"She came in with a rival Alpha, she's a thief, and she holds this moot in contempt."
