Chapter 19: What the Beta Could Not Hold

Dessa unscrewed the tin under the clinic's bright white light and put her nose to it.

She kept it there a long moment.

Then she set it down on the steel counter and wiped her hand on her scrubs.

"There's something in it," she said. "Under the lavender. I know that smell, and I can't place where."

"Kurt says green and bitter."

"Yes. A root of some kind." She pressed her fingers to her eyes. "I'm going to send a sample to the lab in the city. It's three days."

"Three days."

"I'm sorry. It's the soonest anyone will run it without a reason."

I nodded.

Kurt stood in the doorway with his arms folded, his coat still open over his bare chest.

Dessa glanced at him and looked back at me.

"Put a shirt on that man," she said.

I had never been so glad to be teased.

Dessa had a spare grey scrub top in the closet, and he pulled it on over his head with a face that dared anyone to comment.

My phone buzzed on the counter before we had stopped smiling.

It was a number I didn't know, and I almost let it ring.

"Luna?" It was a man's voice, shaking. "It's the Beta. At Harrow Ridge. I'm so sorry to call you. I didn't know who else..."

"What's happened?"

"The pack run this morning. I gave the order for the line to hold, and no one moved. Not one wolf. And there's a warden who says he'll challenge me at the Stone."

"Challenge you for what?"

"For the chair," he said. "He says I've got no command. He says it's Alpha Dray's seat, and I'm only warming it."

I closed my eyes.
