Chapter 28: The Pack Chooses

Fern's POV

"Ask me," Kurt said.

The snow had thickened around us, and he sat very still on the edge of the Stone, waiting.

I had rehearsed it in the kitchen with the cold mug in my hands, and now every word of it was gone.

"The bond I had with Torin was handed to me," I said. "I was twenty-two. The Moon picked, and I went along."

"I know."

"I don't want a Moon this time. I want a choice." I made myself look at him. "Be my mate, Kurt. Not because it's cut into either of us. Because I'm asking, in front of both packs, and you can say no."

He looked at me for a long time.

The scar through his eyebrow was white with cold.

"Say it again," he said.

"Be my mate."

"Again."

"Kurt."

"I've wanted to hear that for a month," he said, and his voice broke in the middle. "Yes. Obviously yes. I was going to ask you at the lodge, and I kept thinking you'd say it's too soon."

"It's too soon."

"Is it?"

"No."

He laughed, wet and astonished, and pulled me against him so hard my breath left me.

His mouth found mine, and I kissed him back with my whole body.

He tasted of snow and salt.

When he lifted his head he rested his forehead on mine.

"The pack is one thing," he said.

"And the bed is another." I was smiling against his mouth. "I think we broke that rule."

"We threw it in a river."

"I know exactly where."

Dawn came up grey over the east gate.

The pack gathered in the courtyard again, in coats thrown over nightclothes, because the old elder had rung the iron bell.

I stood on the packhouse steps with the old man on my right and Kurt one step below, where I'd asked him to stand.
