Chapter 33: The Naming Moon
My son was fourteen days old the night I carried him onto the bridge to give him his name.
Redmoor names its pups at the Moon Stone.
Ironpine names them down at the river, with their feet in the water.
I wanted neither.
I wanted the middle of the bridge, where the white line used to be.
So at moonrise on the twentieth of May, both packs came out onto the black deck in their good clothes and stood along the rails.
Redmoor on the east side.
Ironpine on the west.
Nobody had made that rule.
They'd just done it.
"They'll mix by Christmas," Wyatt said beside me.
"They'll mix by dessert. My mother made four pies."
"Five. I ate one."
The healer had sewn the sling out of my grandmother's quilt.
My son was asleep in it against my chest, with one fist out over the red and white stars.
He'd eaten at seven and screamed at seven-thirty and passed out at seven-forty, which the healer said was a family trait.
She didn't say whose family.
My mother stood at my left shoulder with a dish towel over her arm.
The white-haired chairman of the Redmoor elders stood with his people.
