Chapter 34: Born on the Bridge

I didn't answer her.

I had my hands full of my sister.

"Wyatt," I said, without turning around.

"Already," he said.

I heard his boots go past me toward the town end, slow and heavy.

Then I heard more boots.

When I glanced up, Redmoor warriors stood shoulder to shoulder across the last ten feet of the deck.

Their backs were to us. Their faces were to the stop sign.

Nobody had told them to.

Wyatt stood behind them with my son asleep in the crook of his arm.

Lacey screamed into the concrete.

"Now," I said. "Now you push."

She pushed.

She'd never been good at anything that hurt, and she was good at this.

On the second push the head came, and I felt the cord with two fingers, once around the neck, tight.

I hooked it and slipped it over.

My hands didn't shake.

They never did at work. They only shook afterward, in the truck.

"One more, Lacey."

"I hate you," she sobbed.

"I know. Push."

The shoulders turned in my hands, and then all of her came at once, slippery and gray and furious.

A girl.

She didn't breathe.

I rubbed her back hard with the corner of the quilt sling my mother had thrown down beside me.

One second.

Two.

Then she pulled her face up into a fist and yelled at the moon.

All along both rails, a hundred people let out their breath.

The healer came running down the deck in her flannel nightgown and rubber boots with her bag banging on her hip.
