Chapter 39: Midsummer Eve

"Did he say why?" Wyatt asked, in the truck.

"No."

"What did he say?"

"Please." I watched the dark trees go by. "He's never said please to me in my life."

Wyatt drove a while.

"Then it isn't about the name," he said. "It's about the man."

I didn't sleep much after that.

On the night before Midsummer, the twentieth of June, I sent my mother up to bed at nine.

She'd fallen asleep twice in the infirmary chair with the baby on her chest.

"I'll do the ten o'clock," I said.

"You've got your own at ten."

"Wyatt's got mine."

She went.

At ten the baby woke up and cried in the bassinet.

Lacey lay on her side in the bed with her back to the sound.

She wasn't asleep. I could tell by her shoulders.

I picked the baby up and sat down in my mother's chair by the window with the bottle.

The baby latched on to it and grunted.

"You'll want her now," Lacey said to the wall.

"I've always wanted her."

"You want everything that's mine."

She rolled over and looked at me.

"You even had your pup first. And now you sit there feeding mine."

"Somebody has to."

"I texted her this morning."

Her voice was perfectly calm.

"The third of July. Midnight. The county line on the highway west."

"She'll bring the rest in cash, and I'll hand her over in the headlights."

"Why tell me?"

"So you can't say I didn't warn you." She smiled. "You like things fair."

"I'd rather she grew up a Rhodes than grew up yours."

The baby stopped sucking and frowned up at me, a tiny crease between her eyebrows exactly like our mother's.

"I'm never going to ask you for her," I said.

Lacey blinked.

"Not once," I said. "Not out loud. Not in front of witnesses. Not on my knees. You can stop waiting for it."

"Why not?"

"Because you'd enjoy it."

She opened her mouth and shut it again.

"When she's grown," I said, "she'll ask me who she was sold to. I'll tell her the truth."

For the first time since the bridge, my sister looked at the baby.

Just for a second.

"What will you tell her about me?"

I thought about it.

"That you turned the wheel the wrong way once," I said.

Lacey rolled back over to face the wall.

She didn't say anything else, and I fed her daughter till the bottle was empty and the baby was asleep with milk on her chin.

At eleven Wyatt's Beta knocked on the infirmary door.

He looked uneasy.

"Patrol's got a man on the gravel bar," he said.

"Redmoor. He walked down off the bridge and just stood there. He says he'll wait for you. Nobody else."

I knew before I asked.

"My father."

"Yes, Luna."

I gave the baby to the Beta, who held her.

Then I went down the river path in the dark.

The gravel bar was white under the moon, a long tongue of stones running out into the water.
