Chapter 42: The Gravel Bar

At one in the morning Wyatt walked down the river path to the gravel bar, and I went after him.

I'd left Jed asleep in my mother's room with Lacey's girl in the crib beside him.

My mother had been sitting on the edge of the bed in her clothes.

She didn't ask where I was going.

The stones were white under the moon.

Wyatt stood at the far end of the bar, where the water ran fast and black over the shallows.

He'd taken his boots off.

He was standing in the river to his ankles.

I didn't call to him.

I took my own boots off at the top of the bar.

I walked out over the cold stones and stood in the water beside him.

It was colder than I'd thought.

"Here," he said, after a while.

He pointed at the water a few feet out, where it broke white around a long hump of rock.

"They found him against that."

"I know."

"You don't. Nobody told you that."

"No," I said. "Nobody did."

He didn't look at me.

"He gave me a peppermint once," Wyatt said.

"Who did?"

"Your father. I was nine. My dad took me along to buy hay on the bridge."

"Your father reached in his shirt pocket and gave me a peppermint."

"I thought he was the biggest man I'd ever seen."

I put my hand over my mouth.

"I spat on Garrett's father's grave the week they buried him," Wyatt said. "I drove over in the night and did it."

"Nineteen years I hated the right family and the wrong man."

The water pulled at my ankles.

"I didn't know," I said. "I swear to you I didn't know."

"I know you didn't." He finally turned his head. "That's the worst of it, Brynn. I'd almost rather you had."

"Why?"

"Because then I'd know what to do with it."

We stood in the river.
