The eldest came down the river path on the eighteenth of July with a stick in one hand and the broad observer at her elbow.

She was smaller than I remembered from March.

She walked out onto the gravel bar as if she'd stood on it before, and maybe she had.

The six old men stood together at the upstream end of the bar.

I could see the long car up on the bank road with its parking lights on, and a shape at the wheel.
