Chapter 46: The Old Law

Wyatt didn't move toward him.

He stood on the stones beside me and looked at my father kneeling in the river.

I felt him decide something and put it down again.

"Not yet," I said.

Wyatt turned his head.

"Redmoor's not done," I said. "I'm Redmoor."

He looked at me a moment longer.

Then he nodded, and stayed where he was.

I walked out to the middle of the bar and stood in front of the eldest.

"Ma'am."

"Luna."

"Redmoor came over this river and killed six of Ironpine's on their own stones," I said.

"Then Redmoor went to your Council and called the dead ones raiders."

"It said so for nineteen years, at every feast and every supper and every time a pup asked."

I turned around to the trees, to Ironpine.

"Redmoor is sorry."

"I'm not asking you to take it. I'm saying it, so it's been said by somebody who sits in that chair."

Nobody on the Ironpine bank moved.

"And the water," I said.

"From tonight the Sable River is both banks' water. Bank to bank. Ironpine fishes it where it likes."

"This bar stays Ironpine's. Nobody from my side sets a foot on it again without your Alpha's word."

The white-braided elder stood at the edge of the trees.

"I was going to fish where I liked anyway," he said.

Somebody on the Redmoor bank laughed, and stopped, and then a few more did.
