Chapter 48: The Harvest Moon
On the fifteenth of September, Ironpine came up the Redmoor ridge road for supper.
They came on foot, at six, in their good clothes.
The whole pack walked up through the pines in a long loose line, with the white-braided elder at the front leaning on the Beta's arm.
The boy with the fossil ran ahead.
Redmoor was waiting on the great hall steps.
Nobody had made a rule about it.
They'd just done it.
The chairman came down the steps in his cardigan and shook the elder's hand.
"Your trout are still muddy," the elder said.
"Come in and eat them, then," said the chairman.
I stood at the top of the steps with Jed on my hip and watched them come.
He was four months old and heavy as a sack of meal.
He had a fistful of my braid and was trying to eat it.
My mother stood beside me with Dahlia.
There was a fleck of green paint on her wrist that she hadn't noticed.
"The kitchen?" I said.
"Two coats," she said. "It's awful. I love it."
Wyatt came up the steps last, after his whole pack was in.
He stopped beside me.
He looked down at the front of my dress, where my hand was.
"Still there?" he said.
"Still there."
He'd known since seven in the morning on the twentieth of August.
I'd come in from the hospital and climbed straight into bed in my scrubs and put the paper on his chest while he slept.
He'd woken up and read it.
Then he'd read it again.
Then he'd put his face in my neck and not said anything for a long time.
"It's your hall," he said now. "I'm a guest."
"Who likes their potatoes."
"Who likes their potatoes," he agreed.
We went in.
The great hall was full to the walls.
The cook had put every table out and borrowed six from the church in Larch Falls.
Ironpine and Redmoor sat down along them together, the way they had on the bridge in June, without anybody saying where.
The floor smelled of wax.
The fire was lit.
At the corner table by the fireplace, five old men sat with their beer, and the sixth sat with them.
