Chapter 14: Both Are True

I told Hollis about the note, because I was done with secrets that cost me something.

He read it twice and gave it back.

"I'll be on the wall," he said. "You won't see me."

"If she's lying..."

"Then she's lying forty feet from a wolf who can hear her heartbeat."

I went down to the east gate at midnight with my hands in my jacket.

Sabine was waiting outside the bars in a long coat over her College uniform, with no umbrella and no mother.

Her hair was flat and her lips were gray.

"You slipped your guard," I said.

"Through the laundry door. They think I'm asleep."

"Why are you here, Sabine?"

She took hold of the bars with both hands.

"Because I need to say it before Mother tells me what to say."

I waited.

"I didn't know," she said. "I swear on anything you like. I didn't know it was you."

"You didn't know what?"

"Where it came from." Her voice cracked. "The glow. The first circle I remember, I was nine, and it felt like being poured full. I had been empty all my life, and someone filled me up."

"And me?"

"Mother said you were delicate." She shook her head hard. "She said you slept it off, that the moon was hard on small wolves. I never looked down. Not once. I kept my eyes up at the lamps."

"The mechanic saw you laughing."

She flinched, and her mouth shook.

"It felt wonderful," she whispered. "I was laughing because it felt wonderful. That's the worst thing I have ever said to anyone."

I looked at her for a long moment.

It was true, and it didn't help.

"When did you find out?"
