Chapter 5: The Tonic
My mother stood in the rain at the Keep's gate with an umbrella she wasn't using.
Sabine leaned against her, in the same silver dress she had worn at the hall.
It was wrinkled, and her light-brown hair hung in wet ropes.
"Linnea," Sabine said, and her voice cracked. "Thank God."
I came out through the guard post with my arm in a sling.
Her face was grey.
Three days ago she had been glowing at the front of a pack hall, and now she looked like she had the flu.
"What happened?"
"I can't keep it up," she said. "My wolf won't come. I tried at the College this morning, and nothing, not even a spark."
"She fainted in a lecture," my mother said. "Twice."
"I'm sorry," I said, and meant it a little.
"Are you?" My mother wiped her eyes. "Sweetheart, we don't want a fight. Your father said some hard things, and I told him so."
She took my good hand in both of hers.
"We made a mistake with the fund. We'll fix it. Just come home for the full moon, one circle, like always."
"No."
"Linnea, your sister is ill."
"I'm sorry she's ill," I said. "I'm not going back to that circle."
"It's one night. Everyone does it for family." She pulled a small glass bottle out of her coat and pressed it into my palm. "And take this beforehand. You'll feel dreadful without it, trust me. You've always been so delicate."
The bottle was warm from her pocket.
The tonic inside it was the same pale gold I'd been tipping down the garage drain for two months.
