Odile was quiet on the other end of the line for a long time.
"Say that again."
I said it again.
I heard her set down a teacup, very carefully.
"Ten weeks," she said. "Harvest Moon week. I remember you, Elodie. You cried in my chair and asked me if the heartbeat was supposed to be that fast."
"It was."
"Yes. It was."
Another pause.
"Every scan I print has my stamp on the bottom edge. Date, time, mother's name. And I keep a copy of every single one."
"She cut the bottom off."
"Of course she did."
I could hear her breathing.
"Bring your mate on Saturday," Odile said. "I'll bring my files."
"You're coming?"
"Helena Ironwood invited every healer in the county to her birthday. She likes an audience."
"She's going to get one."
I hung up.
I went back to the counter and sold cinnamon buns for two more hours like my hands weren't shaking.
