Chapter 22: The Lights
On the night of the Lights, every boat in the Bay wore a string of bulbs from bow to masthead.
The whole harbor shone red and green and gold.
I stood on the end of the Beal wharf in my father's oilskin, with Armand at my right hand.
Verna sat at her card table on my left.
Every captain and every wife stood along the rail, and the children had been allowed up past nine.
Six old men and women in good dark coats came down the planks from the road.
They were the Hall's elders.
They had driven four hours in the cold to stand on a Down East wharf on Christmas Eve.
The Hall's Beta came last, big and gray-haired, carrying a wooden box in both arms.
He did not look at the planks.
He looked at me.
"Alpha of the Bay," he said. "The Hall will not name an Alpha until it has made right what it owes you."
He set the box on Verna's table.
Inside lay a brass plate, dull with age, with one word cut into it: BEAL.
"It marked your family's nail on the Colors Wall from 1913," said the Beta.
"Josiah took it down the night he put you aside and left it in a drawer."
The oldest of the elders stepped forward, leaning on her cane.
"We swear the Hall's Wall to the Bay's rail," she said.
"We swear the Hall's answer to the Bay's call, by the next dawn, for as long as there is a Hall."
"The Counter hears it," said Verna, and wrote.
"We were wrong to keep a Beal on our Wall and a Thurston on your wharf."
