Chapter 20: In Front of Everyone
"The first page is from the lawyer's office in Havre," I said.
I held it up so the work lights caught the print.
"It's the guarantor page of the Ness place note.
"My name is on the line.
"I signed it three days before my mother's wedding, because she asked me to, and I didn't read the amount.
"I've read it since.
"It says I stand behind every dollar."
Nobody moved.
"Most of you heard that at the pack meeting," I said.
"What you didn't hear is who it was meant to ruin."
Kjell half rose.
"Miss Brennick, this is hardly the place," he said.
"It's exactly the place," I said.
"You called the vote in front of two hundred people.
"I'd like to answer it in front of the same two hundred."
Dagny lifted her cane an inch off the floor and set it down with a crack.
"Let the girl talk, Kjell," she said.
He sat.
I took out the second sheet.
"This is a list of thirty-one trucks," I said.
"Every one of them belongs to the Dunmore pack.
"On the left is what each truck weighed when it left my scale at Ridley Siding.
"I keep those books, and I can tell you what a thing weighs.
"On the right is what the grain buyer in Havre says it weighed on arrival."
I read the first line aloud.
I read the second.
I read the fifth, and the fifteenth, and the thirty-first.
"Forty pounds," I said.
"Every truck.
"Every time."
A murmur went down the tables.
I felt it climb, and I let it.
"That's forty pounds of the pack's wheat that the buyer took and the pack was never paid for," I said.
"Four seasons of it, from the pack's trucks alone, comes to a little over two hundred thousand dollars."
Somebody near the back swore.
I took out my phone.
