Chapter 21: At My Scale Shed
He was at Ridley Siding at ten to six, standing on the gravel in the dark with his hat in one hand and a long brown envelope in the other.
I saw him from the county road.
I slowed the truck and watched him through the windshield.
He had not brought the borrowed tractor.
He had walked the ten miles.
I could tell by the frost on his boots and the way he stood, with all his weight on one leg.
I parked beside the scale house and got out.
"You walked," I said.
"You said six," said Soren.
"I said bring your hat."
"I've got it," he said, and held it up.
I unlocked the door.
I turned on the heater and the desk lamp, and I opened the ticket book and uncapped my pen.
He stood in the doorway with the envelope.
"That's the deed," he said.
"My father signed it over to you at midnight, in the kitchen.
"My grandmother witnessed it.
"Your mother's the lender, and the bank's man took a copy.
"The Ness place is yours, Kari, if you'll take it."
I looked at the envelope and didn't reach for it.
"Put it on the shelf," I said.
"Put it where?"
"On the shelf, by the calendar.
"I'll get to it."
He put it on the shelf.
"There's a truck coming," I said.
"The Hansen ground comes off at seven.
"I've got a scale to run.
"You'll stand on the apron until I'm finished."
"How long?"
"As long as it takes," I said.
He went and stood on the apron.
He stood there through the first light, and the first truck, and the second.
I ran the scale and wrote the tickets and handed them out the window, and every driver who pulled up looked past me to the tall man in the cold with his hat in his hand.
