Chapter 14: The Honor Guard
I parked the truck behind the woodshed and carried both pies up the lane.
Eight wolves in green canvas coats stood in two rows of four, with their hands at their sides and their eyes on the porch.
Not one of them looked at me.
Their Beta stood at the end of the front row.
She was a short, broad woman with gray in her hair and a clipboard of her own, and she gave me a very small nod.
"Ms. Laitinen," she said. "The Honor Guard of Copper Harbor presents itself."
"For what?" I said.
"For the Look."
I set the pies on the porch rail.
Hilkka's bees hummed across the yard, and the rows did not turn their heads.
"The Courtesy Hour ended at ten o'clock last night," I said.
"Alpha Halme is not offering a Round," the Beta said.
"Then what is this?"
"A guard," said the Beta. "It's a different thing. He said to tell you it's different."
The truck door slammed at the end of the lane.
Soren Halme walked up through the line of trucks in his green coat, with his hands empty and his beard freshly squared.
