Chapter 17: Nothing Happened

Aino's POV

By dark the field had emptied, the pool had been paid out and Hilkka had been carried to bed by two wolves, counting her winnings.

I walked down to the dock alone.

Hilkka's dock is eight planks long, with a dented aluminum canoe tied at the end.

I sat on the last plank with my boots in my lap and my feet over the water.

The lake was warm, and the loons had begun.

Nothing pointed anywhere.

I had spent three days waiting for a feeling to arrive, and the only thing that had come was a latch.

Boards creaked behind me.

"I'm not here for the watch," Soren said. "The watch is over."

"Sit down," I said. "You're blocking the loons."

He sat on the second plank, which put his shoulder about level with my ear.

The dock dipped a full inch.

"So," I said. "Nothing happened."

"No," said Soren.

"Nothing re-seated."

"No."

"You're not my mate," I said.

"No," said Soren. "I'm not."

He said it in the same plain voice he had used to read my rejection back to me.
