Chapter 10: Missoula

He did not ask me one question, and I could not tell if that was kindness or the Alpha's habit of giving orders.

He pulled on his boots, took his truck keys off the hook, and said, "Show me the way."

We ran down the hill together in the dark, and he drove the narrow valley road with the headlights off for the first mile.

I gave directions in a low, cracked voice, and he made every turn before I finished the sentence.

I sat gripping the dashboard and thinking, he is helping me save the last child of the family he burned.

It was the cruelest thing the Goddess had done yet.

The house was a gray rambler on a human street in Missoula, with a plastic slide in the neighbor's yard.

The front door had been kicked in and hung from one hinge.

A light was on in the back bedroom, and I heard furniture crashing.

"Stay behind me," Tobias said.

"No."

I was out of the truck before he could argue.

I went through the broken door, down a hall of family photos, and into a bedroom that smelled of juniper and fear.

Two men stood in the room.

One had Bryn by the hair and a knife at her collar.

She was kicking and screaming, in pajama pants with cartoon cats on them, and her braces flashed in the light.

The other man was the one whose arm I had broken twelve days ago.

Crane's advocate had walked him out of Odessa's cells on a Moot writ, and now he had a pistol.

I knew his face.

I had known it since I was a girl.
