Chapter 10: Sunday Dinner

We went to Sunday dinner because we wanted to see her face.

Hazel had made the decision in the car.

"If we skip it, she knows we know," she said. "If we go, she thinks she's still ahead."

"And Caleb?"

"Caleb comes to dinner because Mother tells him to. He doesn't know anything. He never does."

Torin Mercer met us at the bottom of the estate drive in a dark gray suit, with his leather folder under his arm.

"Council business," he said to me, and held the car door. "I've asked to witness the family's reconciliation talks."

"Is that a real thing?"

"It is now."

His mouth did something near a smile.

I got out without touching his hand, and neither of us mentioned it.

Margaret met us in the front hall.

She was a handsome woman of fifty-eight, with silver in her chignon and pearls at her throat.

She opened her arms the moment she saw me.

"Joanna. Oh, my darling."

She held me for a long time. She smelled of rose water and baking.

I did not look at her left hand.

"You're thin," she said, and held me at arm's length to study me. "Have you been eating? Hazel, is she eating?"

"Soup," Hazel said. "Mostly."

"I made the lemon cake. I made it myself this morning." Her eyes were wet. "I'm so sorry for what my son has done to you. I raised him better than that."

"Thank you, Margaret," I said.

She took my arm and led me into the dining room.

The table was set with the good china.
