Chapter 6: The Other Pregnancy

Caleb stared at Poppy and did not blink.

"Eight weeks," he said.

"Eight weeks," she said. She was crying and smiling at the same time. "I was going to tell you tonight. I swear I was."

Then she turned her head toward the camera that was still running in Hazel's hand.

"Everybody can see it now. I'm not hiding anything."

I looked at my husband's face.

I was nine weeks pregnant with his son. He was standing a few feet from me, and he had not once looked at my stomach.

"Mom," said my son. "I don't like her baby."

"Why not?"

"It doesn't smell like Dad."

I did not know what to do with that, so I kept my face still.

Hazel's phone buzzed in her hand with a new call. She glanced at the screen.

"It's Mother," she said.

She tapped accept and held it out to me.

I took it.

"Joanna, darling." Margaret's voice was warm and fast, and a little out of breath. "I've just seen the stream. Are you hurt? Is the baby all right?"

"I'm fine, Margaret."

"Thank God. Sit down, don't stand on that floor. I'm sending the pack doctor to you right now, and a car for that girl, she should be checked before anyone says anything else." She took a quick breath. "Don't let Caleb say anything foolish. I'll be there in an hour."

"Thank you."

"Of course, darling. You're family."

She hung up.

I handed the phone back to Hazel.

Hazel looked at it for a second and slid it into her bag.

The doctor came in under fifteen minutes. He was an older man with a leather bag, and he did not look at the cameras once.
