Chapter 6: The Antler

The Antler was full on a Thursday night.

It always was. Half of Ravensworth drank there after work, under the elk head and the string lights that never came down after Christmas.

Gwenna held the door for me.

I walked in with the green ledger under one arm and the envelope in my hand.

The noise dropped by half before I reached the middle of the room.

Lorcan was at the end of the bar, holding court.

Meriel was perched on the stool beside him in a pale pink sweater, his arm around her waist.

He saw me and smiled slowly.

[Took her four days. Not bad.]

"Mirren," he called. "Come to apologize?"

A few people laughed. Most didn't.

I set the ledger on the bar, right between his beer and her wine.

The bartender stopped polishing a glass.

"Meriel," I said. "You said I never wrote him once in two years."

Her smile didn't move.

Her eyes did.

They went to the green cover, and the stamp on it, and stayed there.

"This is the Line's outbound mail register." I opened it to the first strip of red tape. "Every letter that leaves the eastern station gets a line. Who sent it. Where it went. Who carried it out."

I turned it so the bar could see.

The same name sat in the carrier column on every page I turned.

People were standing up from their tables now to look.

"Every Sunday for two years," I said. "You signed for every one."

Meriel's face went pink, then white.

"I don't know what that is."

"It's your signature."

"Anybody could write that."

"Anybody could." I opened the envelope and laid the four notes out on the bar in a row. "And then somebody wrote me these, in his name."
