Chapter 17: Empty

"Daisy?"

Ben was looking at my face, not the locket.

"It's empty," I said.

The elevator doors opened on the marble lobby.

I didn't move. Ben had to put his hand on my back and walk me out.

On the sidewalk, I handed him the carrier.

"Take her home," I said. "Lock the door. Change the locks."

"Where are you going?"

"To ask my brother what he took."

Bradley was in the kitchen at the marble island, eating cereal out of the box with his good hand.

The kitten sat beside his phone, grooming one paw.

"Where is it?" I said.

He grinned with his mouth full.

"Where's what?"

I held up the locket on the end of my finger. I'd taken the collar off the tabby in the cab.

Jenna stopped grooming.

"Oh, Annie," she said sweetly. "Did you think we'd sell him a full one?"

"Where's the will?"

"There isn't one." She stretched, long and lazy. "Bradley pried it with a butter knife on your vet's counter at two in the morning. While you were upstairs. Busy."

She let that sit.

"It was empty. Nothing. Not a scrap. Your sainted granny told a grieving girl a story on her deathbed, and you believed it."
