Chapter 22: Debt

The man walked back up the dock to his black car.

I stood there in Ben's flannel shirt with the papers flapping in the wind off the Sound.

Behind me, the porch door banged.

Ben came down the dock barefoot, without his glasses, squinting.

"Who was that?"

"The old man," I said. "Sort of."

He took the papers and held them two inches from his nose.

"Forty million," he read. "Sixty days."

"He can't have the company," I said. "So he wants the money. He bought that debt for a lot less than forty. He wants the whole thing back, with me watching."

Ben handed me back the papers.

He picked up his coffee off the boards and took a sip.

"What do you want?" he said.

Nobody had asked me that in either life.

I looked out at the water.

"I want everybody who works there to still have a job at Christmas," I said. "And I want the tug to stay in the museum. And I want to pay him every cent, early, to his face."

"Okay," Ben said. "So do that."

I spent August doing it.

I sat at my grandmother's desk with the family lawyer and three bankers in very expensive shoes.
