Chapter 20: Week Nine

The hospital cafeteria closed at eight, so we had it to ourselves from six.

Mallory sat at a corner table under a humming vending machine, in the pale blue cardigan, with the red notebook squared up in front of her.

She had a paper cup of tea she hadn't touched.

I sat down across from her and didn't say hello.

Willem stood at the far end of the room with his back to us, studying a rack of chips with great seriousness.

"This is the bill," Mallory said.

"Read me the first name."

"Ginny, they're not..."

"I want all of them. Out loud. And I want what each one was for."

She opened the notebook with both hands.

"Week one. A boy from the dining hall. He sang in the shower and I could hear it through the wall."

"I remember him."

"He was the first one who asked for my number and didn't flinch when I said it was only for a week."

"Week two."

"A man with a boat. He never took me on it."

I turned the page, and she kept reading.

It went on like that for a long time.

A lacrosse player. A man who sold insurance and cried when he laughed. A bartender with a harmonica, a tall man who only spoke French at dinner, and two different men with the same first name.

After the first fifty, I noticed that I was smiling.

After a hundred, I noticed that she was too, a small crooked smile that looked a lot like grief.

"They were kind," I said.

"Most of them. I told every one of them the truth on the first night, that it was one week and it was a favor. About four of them hated me."
