Chapter 6: What the Gate Agent Heard

We landed in Portland in the rain, and I changed every password I owned in the taxi line.

Mom watched me do it with her cane across her knees.

"Email first," she said. "Then the bank."

"I know."

"Then the insurance."

"I know, Mom."

The rental was a two-bedroom near the clinic, with a ramp at the front door that the landlord had built for his own father.

I put her in the bedroom with the window and slept on the couch with my suitcase for a pillow.

In the morning I checked the settings on my old email, which I should have done a year ago.

My old email had a forwarding rule.

It sent a copy of every message to a second address.

The rule was labeled B and K.

I clicked on the date.

It had been made the week Brett proposed.

I sat with the laptop on my knees and read that date four times.

Mom came out of the bedroom leaning on her cane.

"You're making the face," she said.

"Somebody has been reading my mail for eleven months."

"Somebody."

"Brett has the other address. So does Kendra."

Mom lowered herself into the armchair slowly.

"Then they read about my surgery before you told them," she said.

"They read everything."

"And they still gave her the day."

I closed the laptop.

"I'll fix it," I said. "Right now."
