Chapter 7: Portland Rain

Trent was waiting at a diner across from the clinic, and he had left the whistle at home.

I had told him one place and one time, and that I would leave if he brought anyone.

He sat in a back booth with his hands flat on the table.

He looked like he hadn't slept.

"Thanks for coming," he said.

"You have until my mother finishes her exercises."

"That's an hour."

"Then you'd better start."

The waitress set down a coffee for me that I hadn't ordered.

Trent waited until she walked away.

"You asked Colin for the records," he said. "You didn't ask who wrote the rules."

I set my cup down.

"Colin writes in the notebook," I said.

"Colin types what Kendra sends him. The glass, the trip, the anniversary. She'd text Brett a list on Sunday night, and Brett would say yes or change one thing. Then we all acted like it was our idea."

"Your idea."

"She never said it was hers." He rubbed his face. "She'd say, 'I just worry about Bridget. Maybe she needs practice.' Brett would say, 'Good point,' and Colin would add a line."

"And you blew a whistle."

"I thought it was funny." He looked at the table. "At the start. Then you went white at dinner one night, and I kept doing it anyway."
